Self-knowledge: the path to freedom
Jiddu Krishnamurti is a celebrated Indian thinker of the twentieth century. In his speeches, he stressed the importance of self-knowledge and meditation. Before there is any social or political revolution, there needs to be an internal revolution of the human being.
It is undeniable that our mind is influenced by the environment in which we are inserted, by everything that affects us: the books we read, the food we eat, the climate, the tradition and innumerable challenges and reactions. However, the mind is able to minimize negative influences, both conscious and unconscious.
How?
According to Krishnamurti, the mind has the ability to observe its own functioning between past-present-future and, with this, to perceive the cracks, the oscillations between the times. It is in this interval between thoughts, in this period of silence, that the strength of meditation lies.
Experiencing this silence can free us from conditioning. In the words of the author: “When the mind is not giving continuity to thought, when it is in a state of stillness that is not induced, that is not caused by anything, only then can freedom come.”
In this sense, it is no exaggeration to say that freedom is not related to achievements or objects. It is not outside of us, but inside. And the only way to truly achieve it is to dive deep within.
