Contemporary Malaise and Socio-Emotional Education
Entering the third decade of this new millennium, we find ourselves very anxious and depressed, revealing deep psychological malaise.
Freud already addressed this issue in 1929-30, with his reflections in the text “Malaise in civilization”, where he highlights the repression of desires in the civilizing context: the social contract that oppresses us and takes away our freedom.
Bauman, a Polish writer, makes a rereading of Freud in his book The malaise in postmodernity, in which he highlights the malaise linked to unlimited freedom, to “it is forbidden to prohibit”, which, according to him, can, by the excess of freedom, create boredom, boredom and leave us aimless, exhausted and desbussolados.
Ehrenberg, a French writer since the end of the last century and particularly in his 2010 book The Society of Malaise, warns of the roots of malaise with a focus on the autonomy and individualism of contemporary society.
All these reflections on malaise suggest an effort to understand it. It is unequivocal, however, the fact that the malaise exists and deserves our attention.
There are no short ways to solve this nuisance: the issue of contemporary malaise is complex and requires great care not to address the problem with mediocre and ineffective answers.
Even considering the chaotic condition of the world in which we live, even considering suffering as an inherent condition of life, we can at least welcome the possibility, or if we want, the hope, in human sensitivity and intelligence to offer some help.
Actions that can help in the reflections on the roots of the contemporary malaise and present experiences that can contribute to a better management of the malaise are something unquestionably necessary and valid.
